Suppose I gave the ebook version of ALT away for free - would you be more inclined to buy a nice, bound copy?

Devious Comments

Cory Doctorow got his start by giving away his writing, and then making it easy for people to buy it if they wanted to.

dA is for the literary arts, too.
I'm more than willing to pay for something I like; having a chance to peruse it on the small screen before purchasing it off the press would almost be like watching the movie then buying the DVD and soundtrack (much like I plan to do for Sunshine).

Still here; just not as involved.

Honestly, it doesn't matter, I'm going to buy like four anyways once they make their way to not-credit-card-land.
I've heard that name before. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom? Isn't that the first novel to be released under the Creative Commons? I could be wrong about that . . .

I read a blog entry linked from Neil Gaiman's journal recently about two authors who decided to chart their sales for one month. One author offered his book as a free download; the other did not. Naturally the author who offered a free ebook sold far more copies. I figure it's worth looking into.

What's your opinion on the matter, Mr. Smith?

I'm buying the real book. Free ebooks are great, but I can't take them on the subway. :/

Very true, though you may want to be careful about reading A Life Transparent while on any sort of train. Bad things tend to happen. ;)
